JPA VISION FOR COMMUNITY (CODE OF CONDUCT)
Vision for our Community outlines a list of values, standards, and responsibilities we uphold and practice at this school. This applies to all faculty, visiting artist lecturers, students, and guests who take part in any events or program offerings at Janes and Pang Atelier (JPA). JPA reserves the right to intervene and terminate one’s membership and involvement with the school if an individual pursues behaviors and actions that contravene the growth of our community.

Community Building
At JPA, we do our very best to welcome people of all backgrounds, experiences, and socio-economic standings to ensure that art education is truly accessible and equitable for all. With that said, we also reject any form of prejudice, aggression, hateful or objectifying speech against any groups or individuals that affect the peace of our community. We strive to embrace the differences between all, not discriminate.

Communication
Communication is crucial to developing a healthy community. We expect our members to communicate in a manner that is direct, clear, respectful, and beneficial to the growth of others. Comments that are hostile and antagonistic in nature would not be tolerated. If there is any grievance with a faculty or student, please directly communicate with them to resolve the issue.

Professionalism
While JPA is a space in which members can foster lifelong, meaningful relationships in a tight knit fellowship, we still expect our members to conduct their relationship with professionalism and proper discernment. Please refrain from any behavior, attitude, or speech that intrudes others’ personal spaces and boundaries. Any ill-intended comments or provocation for conflict and tension will incur consequences.

Practice of Emotional Regulation and Healthy Boundaries
Please respect one another’s emotional wellbeing by practicing healthy boundaries and emotional regulation. In the situation of a trigger or emotional arousal, we ask that individuals first practice awareness and self regulation in order to promote a healthy interaction and communication with others, including staff.

Property Damage / Theft
Items and supplies that are for communal sharing will be labeled as “JPA Communal”; any unlawful appropriation of goods not belonging to the person will be categorized as theft. Any harm to real or personal property of JPA is also strictly prohibited.

Unauthorized Entry and use of studio space
Sharing our door code to non-JPA students is considered trespassing and will not be tolerated. Only students who are in the cohort or have received prior permission from owners at JPA have access to studio usage.

Freedom of Expression with Respect
At JPA, we welcome and foster diverse thinking and ideas. Anyone should have the right to express their ideas without fear of retaliation or putting themselves at risk. Students and staff have freedom to question, test, and to put forward new ideas and controversial opinions in a respectful manner that is not stifling in nature. Any disagreement of one’s idea shall not entitle an individual to act in a hostile, unfriendly manner towards another.

Disruptive Conduct and/or Defiance
Behavior or conduct that interferes or disrupts the operation of the school or class meetings include but are not limited to:

  • Making rude, condescending, insulting and demeaning statements to others

  • Using angry, hostile tones

  • Shouting, throwing things or slamming doors when displeased

  • Berating, belittling, and demeaning staff and peers in front of others
Showing insensitive, curt and disrespectful treatment of peers and faculty

  • Being physically or verbally abusive toward others

  • Attacking immediately if criticized or questioned

  • Threatening litigation when displeased or challenged

  • Disdaining authority and believing that rules do not apply to them

  • Intentionally causing dispute through provocative language, criticism, or harassment

  • Regularly being the source of many issues that, if taken singly, would be of limited relevance, but when taken together, become highly significant.

These behaviors are not tolerated and shall incur consequences (at worst, termination of one’s involvement with the school) when issues do not resolve after the initial warning or confrontation.

    Trust
Trust is at the core of a strong, healthy community. We expect trust from our students that we uphold competence and professionalism, and in turn we trust that students and participants alike have good intentions and eagerness in their involvement with the school. Any conducts or behaviors that hinders, diminishes, or degrades the quality and dynamic of trust in JPA will not be tolerated.

    Integrity
We value integrity and a strong work ethic at JPA. Students, visiting artist faculty, and faculty should strive to produce high quality work and are open to collaboration, risk-taking, and learning from one another. JPA often designs unorthodox projects that require abstract thinking; showing patience and flexibility in face of unexpected variables is crucial to a healthy studio culture. We ask that students and faculty take responsibility over their actions and address their questions in a respectful and productive manner.

    Weapons and Dangerous Objects
Weapons and dangerous objects (that can put others’ safety at risk are strictly prohibited from entering the premises of JPA. Dangerous objects include but are not limited to: any explosive material or device; any firearm or gas weapon; any article, object, or instrument that may be employed to cause bodily harm to a person or damage to property, or to render a person temporarily paralyzed or unconscious, and any other object similar in nature to the objects listed above.
